American Coot

Though commonly mistaken for ducks, American coots are only distantly related to ducks, belonging to a separate order, the family Rallidae.

Noisier and more quarrelsome than their relatives, the rails, American coots are known for their unmelodic medleys of cackles, grunts, and croaks. The young have a remarkable means of escaping danger: at the first warning from an adult, chicks dive underwater and grasp a plant stem in their bill, anchoring themselves to the bottom until the threat has passed.

Northern Shoveler Portrait

During my recent Better than Bosque workshop in New Mexico, we had a ton of fun with the ducks in Albuquerque. The water was perfect for reflections of the various species of ducks that came close.

Blue Goose (Dark Morph Snow Goose) Ventral Bank

A Blue Goose (Dark morph Snow Goose) offers a ventral view as it banks vertically to lose altitude rapidly while descending into a corn field during my Better than Bosque Workshop in New Mexico.

“Snow Geese are possibly the noisiest of all waterfowl. Their main call, made by both males and females, is a nasal, one-syllable honk given at any hour of the day or night, at any time of year, in the air or on the ground. Distant calling flocks are reminiscent of a pack of baying hounds. Birds less than a year old have a clearer and higher-pitched whistle. Family groups use a series of guttural notes to communicate with each other while feeding. Parents make a fast, quiet series of notes as a brood call to round up goslings. During nesting, they use a penetrating alarm call that varies in intensity. The flight call is a continuous chorus of shrill cries, hoarse honks, and high-pitched quacks, audible both day and night.”

Snow Goose Landing in Last Drops of Golden Light

The light was spectacular, and the Snow Geese were plentiful. For most of the afternoon, the wind blew into our faces when we were positioned with our shadows pointed toward the birds with the sun at our backs. The worst combination: the birds landing toward the wind or away from us. All we saw was the south end of northbound birds - smile! The sweeter the light got, the more the wind shifted in our favour. What a perfect ending!

Wood Duck in a berry tree at first light

The last morning of my Better than Bosque workshop was cold, windy and cloudy. We drove to Albuquerque to broaden our portfolio and look for ducks. A few Wood Ducks flew up into this tree to eat the berries as the sun broke through the clouds. I was lucky to get a few frames of a beautiful drake clear from the branches and obstructions before it flew off in the wrong direction. Reminds me of an ornament in a Christmas Tree - smile.

I am finally home from an extended RV road trip to my New Mexico Better than Bosque Workshop. We had some great times with old friends before and after and spent extensive time scouting to ensure that we were in the best locations at the best time for the Better than Bosque workshop. Bosque del Apache is the draw, but the conditions for migrating birds and visiting photographers continue to decline, so we went to other nearby reserves where the birds were!

The Blue Goose

The dark colour of the blue morph Snow Goose is controlled by a single gene, with dark being partially dominant over white. If a pure dark goose mates with a white goose, the offspring will all be dark (possibly with white bellies). If two white geese mate, they have only white offspring. If two dark geese breed, they will have mostly dark offspring but might also have a few white ones.

The oldest Snow Goose on record, a blue morph, was shot in Idaho in 2020. It was 30 years and eight months old and was banded initially in Arizona in 1990.

Sandhill Crane After the Storm

This Sandhill Crane was photographed during my Best of Bosque Workshop as it landed in golden light after a storm that brought record-breaking rainfall during a drought. The dark stormy sky was the perfect backdrop as hundreds of Sandhill Cranes started to land in the fields. My December workshop is full this year, but a couple of spots are left for 2024!

A highlight for me during my Best of Bosque workshop every year is spending time with wood ducks that never disappoint. This image was made with the Sony Alpha 1 camera with a 600mm f/4 lens and 1.4X extender.

An American Kestrel in flight from my Better than Bosque workshop in New Mexico. Talk about heart-stopping action! This was from my last time entering Bosque del Apache NWR (AKA: The Bosque) last December.

I still have one spot left for my Dec. 5-9, 2023 Better than Bosque workshop.

Northern Harriers made daily appearances during my Best of Bosque workshops again this year. This one seemed to love hunting along the ditch line in front of us.

A Snow Goose takes flight in the morning light from my recently concluded Best of Bosque workshop. Most of the cranes and Snow Geese had left the safety of the pond before the best light. Having a lot fewer birds made it easier to isolate single birds as they took off to head to the corn fields to eat.

Sandhill Crane Golden Silhouette

As the sun set in the background, we focused on the golden reflection and the magical silhouettes that the Cranes projected. Exposure for these is easy: f/8, 1/5,000s (to freeze movement and get a sharp outline) and ISO 500. Adjust black point, colour temperature and contrast to artistic taste.

American Kestrel in flight

On my way out of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge for the last time this year, I had an epic encounter with this American Kestrel. So many images and so many poses! WOW, I think my heart stopped a couple of times!

The smallest member of the falcon family in North America is also called a Sparrow Hawk. Studies have shown that kestrels can see ultraviolet light. Researchers believe that this ability to see UV light enables them to vividly see the urine markings and trails that small mammals, such as voles, leave as they run along the ground. These trails and urine markings would likely look bright yellow to a kestrel, therefore alerting them to the presence of a meal.

Here is a female Northern Harrier from yesterday (day 4 of my Best of Bosque workshop). We have had some near-epic Northern Harrier encounters so far. My favourite is still the one I posted on Wednesday morning with the cottonwood trees in the background SEE IT HERE.

Unlike many raptors, hen or northern harriers have historically been favourably regarded by farmers because they eat mice that damage crops. Harriers are sometimes called "good hawks" because they pose no threat to poultry as some hawks do.

We were lucky to find some fantastic opportunities yesterday during my Best of Bosque workshop in New Mexico. About 50 Cranes flew into this location close enough to get some great images with great backgrounds. This is one of my favourites from the day.

Bosque del Apache was quiet yesterday morning after the near record-breaking rain with loads of birds, but the majority were far from the wet, muddy and messy roads. We regrouped and moved for the afternoon session of my Best of Bosque Workshop and found some ducks to pose for us :)

This is a drake (male) Wood Duck that did a flyby at last light.
