Bald Eagle STORMFLIGHT

Christopher Dodds November 7, 2020

An image from an epic day during my last Bald Eagle Workshop in Alaska. I love photographing on overcast days, especially when there is a fresh blanket of snow to reflect the ambient light and illuminate the underside of dark bards like the Eagle here. The big problem is all of the resulting images have bright white backgrounds (if you expose the subject correctly) without much (if any) detail in the sky. To solve the problem, and make the image resemble what we saw with our eyes, I replaced the white sky in the image with a separate image of the sky in Photoshop. The resulting composite image has loads of visual impact.

Bald Eagle Wings

Christopher Dodds November 6, 2020

Here’s a Bald Eagle that seemed to be showing off its wings during an awesome afternoon during my Bald Eagle Workshop in early March. We were starting to hear more about the spread of COVID-19, but never imagined it would stop tourism, travel and have such a devastating impact on so many people and families around the world. This was the last workshop I hosted before the COVID chaos, so I am grateful that I had such amazing clients to share it with.

Did you know? When a bald eagle loses a feather on one wing, it will lose a feather on the other in order to keep its balance.

Great Gray Owl HOP

Christopher Dodds November 5, 2020

KUDOS:

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip with Chris photographing snowy owls.

Chris’s knowledge of the location of the owls each day was key to all the participants getting great opportunities to photograph the owls.

What made the trip a great success for me was Chris’ easy and informative style in communicating camera settings and techniques for best results.

I would highly recommend a trip with Chris.

Northern Hawk Owl

Christopher Dodds November 3, 2020

Chris Dodds knows how to do a workshop!

“I had the pleasure of attending Chris' Snowy Owl Workshop this past January. To be honest, I did not know much about Chris before the trip. All I knew was the quality of his images on his website and that I wanted Snowy owl pictures. Needless to say, Chris met and exceeded my expectations. He goes over and above to get you in the right place at the right time to capture the best images possible. Having been on numerous workshops around the world with various leaders, I can say Chris worked harder than most..... He also made sure that we were in position to get a variety of images and not just 1000 photos of the same animal behavior. Chris knows his birds and what they are going to do next (as much as humanly possible). He teaches in a way that things make sense. I was getting frustrated with my photography before this trip. I was able to get great shots before the workshop but felt that the percentage of great shots to missed shots needed to be better. Chris explained ways to change a few of my bad habits in a way that no one else ever did. I have tried manual exposure in the past but never got comfortable with it but after a day or two with Chris it clicked in my mind and my images improved and percentage of keepers went up.

If you get a chance to go on a workshop with Chris I would highly recommend it. I know I will again.”

My Niece and I went to Point Pelee with Chris Dodds Photo and it was a terrific experience. He is very knowledgeable with birds, their species, their calls and is quite witty. If you listen when he tells you to bring certain things on your trip and when he talks about camera usage etc you will gain so much from your time with him! He knows his clientele very well and try’s to cater to them. He has a good analogy on some things and makes you focus on the details. It was an enjoyable week!

Coastal Brown Bear Mother with cub

Christopher Dodds October 28, 2020

At the end of a very long day hiking around Katmai National Park (Alaska) in the rain knee-deep in mud this mother and cub seemed to look as wet and muddy as I felt - smile. As always in Katmai, we respect the bears from a distance, but they usually tend to gravitate to my group as a trusted shield from the roaming adult males (called boars) and move closer to us. I can see from the timestamps on the images that we spent 44 minutes waiting for both of them to look our way at the same time; we were lucky to have the added bonus of the cub touching mom :)

Since the sky is much brighter than the bears, it was extremely bright and washed-out in the image, so I replaced the background sky to make the scene resemble more closely what my eyes saw.

Crested Auklet Preening

Christopher Dodds October 27, 2020

“As an experienced wildlife & landscape photographer I would highly recommend you attend one of Chris Dodds' workshops - I have attended a number of Chris' workshops and each of them reflect Chris' caring. I just attended the St. Paul, Alaska workshop - typical of Chris' professionalism, and expertise. He only takes you to those unique shooting opportunities when he is convinced that the shoot will provide you the experience you are seeking. In the Saint Paul Island workshop's case he has visited this unique special remote island for over 25 years. The local small population obviously respects Chris and they do all they can to assist the experience. You shoot from a variety of locations, with many types of birds, complimented by wild fox, sea lions etc. Chris has the talent to assist both experienced and novice photographers - he makes sure you get the opportunities you want, and if you need extra help he enjoys jumping in and helping you. If you had to summarize Chris' workshops in a few words - Great well researched locations, tremendous local knowledge, dedicate to your photographic results being all you could possibly want.”

Parakeet Auklet After the Storm

Christopher Dodds October 26, 2020

Saint Paul Island is, for all intent and purpose, in the middle of the Bering Sea. When there is a storm, it is usually quite a storm with heavy rain and high winds. The birds stay out at sea, or on/in their nests to protect their eggs/babies. It is after the storm when the birds start to arrive back at the cliffs in big numbers. It can be overwhelming, at times, seeing the number of birds swirling around. This is when we fight the urge to photograph the flying birds, and focus our lenses on the perched birds that seem to come out to stretch, or linger on the cliffs to rest. Even though I used a small aperture to try to get some details in the sky, the resulting image has very little detail, so I replaced the sky to add some drama to this image.

Least Auklet Portrait

Christopher Dodds October 23, 2020

Also known as the Knob-billed Auklet, the least auklet (Aethia pusilla) is a seabird and the smallest species of auk. It is the most abundant seabird in North America, and one of the most abundant in the world, with a population of around nine million birds. They are able to locate their nest sites from the previous season, even when covered with snow. They sit where the nest is and take possession of it once the snow has melted.

Red-faced Cormorant in flight with nesting material

Christopher Dodds October 22, 2020

Also known as Red-faced or Violet Shags, this Red-faced Cormorant brings home some nesting material to its nest on the cliffs of Saint Paul Island, Alaska.

Deriving their name from the Latin term Corvus marines (“sea raven”), cormorants are highly adapted for underwater hunting. Their bodies are streamlined and somewhat flattened beneath, the neck is long and subtle, the wings broad, long and blunt, and the legs powerful and set far back. Using their lean bodies, they thrust through the water and along the seabed to flush out prey.

Pribilofs Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch In Flight

Despite being about 15 % larger than the other two distinct and recognizable breeding populations of this species, it was still rather difficult to get a decent in flight photograph while sitting atop the wind-blown cliffs of Saint Paul Island in the rain with a super-telephoto lens. The wind was howling and the Finch would occasionally stall as it looked for insects on the cliff directly below me.

Thick-billed Murre (Brünnich's guillemot) in flight with fish

Christopher Dodds October 13, 2020

Here's a Thick-billed Murre bringing a meal to it's baby on Saint Paul Island, Alaska. Catching a reasonable image of this species in flight can be challenging with their top speed of 75MPH (120KM/H). This bird may have flown up to 160km (100 miles) and dove down to 100 meters (330ft) to catch this fish; that's a lot of work! The oldest recorded Thick-billed Murre was at least 28 years, 8 months old when it was found in eastern Canada in 2009. It had been banded in Nunavut in 1982.

Crested Auklet sends fragrant signals

Christopher Dodds October 9, 2020

Here is a Crested Auklet from Saint Paul Island, AK. Saint Paul Island is part of the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea between Alaska and Russia.

The tangerine-scented crested auklet is the first bird found to send fragrant signals.

Whenever I have been to seabird colonies over the years, I often smell seabirds before seeing them. Most often, the smell at a seabird colony is quite foul, especially on a hot sunny afternoon after some rain. When I smell what can only be described as someone peeling a tangerine next to me, I know there are Crested Auklets nearby - smile.

Crested auklets sniff necks when they meet. The birds seem to use perfume to make themselves attractive. When birds meet, they press their bills against each other's necks - feathers here have the strongest smell. It's not known what the perfume signifies. It could convey the bird's quality as a mate - well-fed birds might be able to produce more scent.

The perfume is a blend of oils, but how it's made is also a mystery. Oil from the auklets' preening gland is odorless, but bacteria on the feathers might break it down into something smellier. The birds only smell during the breeding season, with males and females becoming equally pungent.

Many birds, including vultures and pigeons, rely on scent to find food and navigate, but the use of chemicals to signal to others was unknown. The auklets open up a new field, says physiologist Bernice Wenzel of the University of California, Los Angeles.

"It's too soon to say whether [these signals] will turn out to be common," says Wenzel. "The important thing is that more research of this sort should be conducted."

Top birds in flight settings for Sony a9II

Christopher Dodds April 27, 2020
“Hey Chris!
It’s Trevor Pottelberg. Hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy! With the unique spring we are all facing, I have been finding myself photographing more songbirds. They are obviously a lot faster and more erratic than the larger predatory birds. Do you have any suggestions of settings for capturing them in flight? I’ve tried with the Flex Point M setting but haven’t had a lot of tracking luck when a bird leaves it’s perch. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks Trevor”

Hey Trevor,

Thank you. We are safe, healthy and staying in self-isolation on our property.

There are a lot of factors that collide into a razor sharp action shot of anything. Here’s the short list:

  • Firmware: Make sure you are using the latest firmware from your camera manufacturer. It amazes me how few opt to check and upgrade their camera’s firmware. Manufacturers constantly tweak and tune many aspects of how your camera operates and often unlock great new features.

  • Shutter Speed: I strive to use at least 1/5,000s when I want razor sharp images. As you can see from the settings above, I was at 1/6,400 of a second exposure to ensure every detail was sharp in this image. Our cameras and lenses resolve so much detail these days, it is imperative to start to realize that freezing our movement (or that of the camera/lens) is just as important as freezing the subject; think about the wingtip speed of a windmill vane (blade).

  • Silent shutter: Be sure to use electronic shutter and turn off any shutter sounds so that your subject remains undisturbed. Migrating songbirds fly away as soon as they hear the sharp sound of a mechanical shutter; it was always the best way to end a great opportunity, we used to have to hold off until everything was just right and often missed the best image with hope of something better; something mirrorless has changed forever.

  • Solid footing: I use a solid tripod with gimbal head (Wimberley Head II) as often as I am able.

  • Camera settings: Here are the key settings that I use most often to ensure the most reactive AF on my Sony a9II:

  • Priority set in AF-C (Camera 1 - 5/14): AF

  • Focus area (Camera 1 - 5/14): Tracking: Flexible Spot S (note that less experienced action shooters or those who have trouble acquiring and following the target may get better results with Flexible Spot M)

  • AF Tracking Sens. (Camera 1 - 6/14): 1 (Locked-on). This is counter-intuitive to some who feel that they need to use 5 (Responsive) for fast moving birds with erratic flight patterns. The AF remains really responsive when set to 1 (Locked-on), however it will stay locked-onto your target much more reliably. If you were photographing a team sporting event, you would choose 1 (Locked-on) to continue to track a player when other players enter the frame between you and your target. You would choose 5 (Responsive) if you wanted to start tracking that new player who entered the frame in front of your original target.

Hope this helps. Enjoy and be safe.

Bald Eagle Fishing in Golden Light MISSED IT

Christopher Dodds April 25, 2020

I’ve only been fishing a handful of times, but there is a story for every one of them. When fishing for the first time shortly after moving to Canada my first bike (a metallic gold banana seat bicycle - but I probably shouldn’t tell you that) was destroyed by a drunk taxi driver in Chateauguay, Quebec and new friend that day Kevin Harvey (Now of Juno Nominated Durham County Poets fame) saved the day like the rock star his today (He remembered the Taxi permit and license numbers, and his dad drove me and my wrecked bicycle home). I’ve fought battles with what seemed like monster Halibut in Alaska, but they were really 20 pound Rock Fish. Finally, I do know that feeling of a great catch escaping the hook just before being landed in the boat when Halibut fishing in the Shelikof straight (AK); it would have been the biggest Halibut ever caught I’m sure!
