Coastal Brown Bear Photography in Alaska: Capturing a Curious Moment on the Katmai Coast

Christopher Dodds March 18, 2026

There are moments in wildlife photography when everything slows down — and this was one of them.

This young Coastal Brown Bear approached with quiet, almost gentle curiosity, moving steadily through the grass, eyes fixed straight ahead—no drama, no chaos — just presence.

Encounters like this are what keep me coming back to Alaska year after year.

Photographing bears at close range isn’t about luck — it’s about understanding behaviour, reading body language, and allowing the moment to unfold naturally — and just as importantly, letting them read our body language. This bear wasn’t stressed, wasn’t reacting — it was simply exploring its world, and for a few seconds, we were part of it.

This is what it’s all about.

Not just photographing a bear… but photographing a moment of curiosity.

And those are the images that stay with you.

👉 Join Me in Alaska — June Coastal Brown Bear Workshop

If moments like this are what you’re chasing, I invite you to join me this June along the Katmai Coast.

Day 1 (June 12) begins with a picturesque floatplane flight from Kodiak, tracing the rugged coastline before landing to meet our ship anchored along the wild, dreamlike Katmai coast. After lunch, we head straight out to photograph bears that very afternoon.

From there, it’s full immersion — photographing Coastal Brown Bears every day from Day 2 through Day 7.

On Day 8 (June 19), we enjoy one final morning photographing bears after breakfast before another spectacular flight back to Kodiak.

Early June is a special window — before the sedge grass grows tall — giving us clean views of spring cubs and incredible opportunities for intimate, eye-level encounters like this.

Spots are limited, and this trip often fills quickly.
