Razorbills, Puffins, and the Magic of L’Île aux Perroquets — 2025 Workshop Wrap-Up

There's a special kind of magic that happens on L’Île aux Perroquets — a tiny, windswept island off the coast of Quebec, where seabirds soar above the Gulf of St. Lawrence and every corner hums with wild beauty.

As we wrapped up our 2025 Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshops, one moment stood out in particular: a Razorbill slicing through the air, a glimmering fish clamped tightly in its beak. With powerful, purposeful wingbeats, it returned to its burrow hidden among the rocks — where a hungry chick waited for dinner. It's these small, fleeting encounters that stay with us long after we've left the island.

Razorbills, though often overshadowed by their more famous cousins, the Atlantic Puffins, are just as captivating. They're expert divers, capable of reaching depths of over 100 meters in search of prey. Monogamous and fiercely devoted, these birds return each year to the same breeding grounds — and often the same mate — to raise their single chick.

L’Île aux Perroquets is one of the rare places in Quebec where you can witness this intimate part of their life cycle up close. Alongside the Razorbills, we shared the island with thousands of Puffins, Common Murres, and the occasional curious Gray Seal or passing Minke Whale (We saw 25 different individuals — including a couple of calves — in a single afternoon). The biodiversity here is astounding, and every day offered new sights, sounds, and stories.

Our home for the workshops — the beautifully restored lighthouse keeper's house — offered cozy accommodations, warm meals, and a front-row seat to one of North America's most unique seabird colonies. As always, it was a dream setting for photography, learning, and meaningful connection with nature.

Looking back at the smiling faces in our final group photo, it's clear: this place leaves a mark. Whether it was the thrill of capturing the perfect in-flight shot, watching Puffins clumsily land in the grass, or soaking in the island's serenity under the midnight sun, everyone left with full memory cards and fuller hearts.

Atlantic Puffin in Flight with Fish at Last Light & The Artistic Power of a Black Background

During my recent Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshop, a puffin broke out of the shadows at last light. It was a beautiful, adrenaline-inducing sight for everyone. The setting sun cast a radiant, golden spotlight on the bird as it flew, illuminating its distinctive white chest and vibrant beak. In that rich, warm light, its bill full of freshly caught fish gleamed—a powerful testament to a successful hunt.

More than just a meal, that bountiful catch is nourishment for a puffling waiting safely in the burrow. The little one needs to gain weight and fat stores before following its instincts to learn to swim, fish, and fly on its own after its parents leave.

The Artistic Merit of a Black Background

The high-contrast black background is the secret to what makes this image so compelling. It's a key technique in bird photography that elevates the subject by making it stand out from the distractions of the environment. By simplifying the image, this method focuses the viewer's attention solely on the bird's shape, texture, and details. The result is a more dramatic and elegant scene that highlights the bird as the star of the show.

Thank you so much for the images and for sharing your time and knowledge with us! To single out a single favourite thing would be impossible, as the entire Workshop was truly wonderful. Everything from the setting, and being amongst so many puffins in their natural habitat, to the freedom to wander and explore with each other or on our own, to the excitement of forever searching the skies for a puffin with a mouth full of fish...  it was truly an incredible and unforgettable experience. I will never forget the wondrous feeling of standing on the beach, as countless puffins flew overhead (in arms reach!) into their burrows on the cliffs, knowing that this is all part of their annual journey and that most of the time they will be out at the sea, on their own... How lucky are we?!! Technically, my biggest takeaway is the focus (no pun intended) on getting everything right "in-camera" the first time, and getting to feel more comfortable trusting my histogram without stressing about ISO numbers. Clearly, from the feedback on my images, it was a very valuable lesson. 

I will forever have cherished memories of these whimsical and adorable seabirds, as well as new friendships with others I never would have had the opportunity to have met.

Atlantic Puffins in Perfect Light – Quebec Deluxe Atlantic Workshop Report

There are few experiences more exhilarating for a wildlife photographer than capturing Atlantic Puffins in flight — especially when the conditions line up just right. This morning, on the first day of the second (of five) Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshop here in Quebec, we enjoyed golden light spilling over the sun-washed cliffs and calm winds — a golden recipe for clean, crisp flight shots.

We spent the morning focused on Puffins returning to their burrows with bills full of Capelin, a telltale sign of successful offshore fishing. Although the lack of wind meant less overall flight activity, it forced us to slow down and be more intentional with our compositions, honing in on those magical moments when Puffins banked toward us in the perfect light. It was a magical morning, and the results were truly spectacular.

One of the most heartening trends that we have observed over the years is the continuing nesting success of Atlantic Puffins in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Conservation efforts and protected breeding sites are paying off — more Puffins are successfully raising chicks, which means more opportunities to witness these iconic seabirds returning with food, mid-flight, at just the right angle for that dream shot.

Atlantic Puffin Out of the Fog

In my previous post (Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish & Atlantic Puffin Photography Workshop Update), I shared our initial disappointment when a thick blanket of clouds and fog obscured the glorious morning light we'd hoped for during one of last summer's Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshops. However, as often happens on foggy mornings when the temperature climbs above the dew point, things began to change, and they did change quickly!

Shortly after capturing those first foggy images, the fog started to lift. The sun's golden light broke through, while hundreds of Puffins began returning to their burrows, their beaks laden with fish for their hungry young. It was a moment that gifted us with an abundance of unforgettable images to complete our already bursting portfolios.

The dew point is a crucial atmospheric measurement, representing the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapour and condensation begins. When the air temperature cools down to meet the dew point, the invisible water vapour in the air transforms into tiny liquid water droplets. If this condensation happens at ground level, we experience it as fog. As the sun rises and warms the air, the temperature often climbs above the dew point, causing these tiny water droplets to evaporate back into vapour, and the fog dissipates, revealing clearer skies and, as in our case, incredible photographic opportunities.

The air was thick with anticipation during my Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshop, but a hush fell over the group as we realized our much-hoped-for golden sunrise was a no-show, replaced by a soft blanket of fog and an overcast sky. For many, a "perfect" sunrise is the holy grail of wildlife photography.

But here's a little secret: sometimes, imperfect conditions lead to the most perfect moments.

As the fog rolled in, something magical happened. Hundreds of Atlantic Puffins, undeterred by the muted light, began their graceful descent, wings beating steadily, beaks laden with silvery fish. They weren't waiting for the sun; they were focused on their mission: feeding their hungry pufflings nestled deep in their burrows.

And that's when the true beauty of the scene unfolded. The monochromatic backdrop, with its soft, diffused light, made their vibrant, almost neon-orange beaks truly pop. Every feather, every subtle movement, became incredibly defined against the muted tones. It was a masterclass in how different light can reveal different dimensions of a subject.

There are moments in nature that etch themselves into your memory. One such moment unfolded during my Deluxe Puffins Galore and so much more workshop last summer, with my small group of photographers perched on a beach at the base of the seabird nesting colony. The tide was changing, and with it came a spectacle of thousands of Razorbills and Atlantic Puffins circling as they returned from a successful fishing expedition; they created a dynamic scene against the backdrop of an incoming heavy fog. While presenting a photographic challenge, the fog added an element of magic to the encounter. Birds would materialize out of the mist with mouthfuls of fish, their dark silhouettes contrasting against the ethereal backdrop.

We were particularly captivated by the Razorbills with their beaks laden with fish. I captured this dorsal view as it banked in flight using my Sony 100-400mm zoom lens at 400mm and my Sony a1. The details recorded in its dark feathers are remarkable.

The scene on the beach was equally captivating. My fellow photographers, focused and determined, worked to capture the fleeting moments. The interplay of the fog, the waves crashing on the shore, and the cries of the seabirds created an atmosphere of awe-inspiring wilderness.

During my Deluxe Puffins Galore and so much more workshop, the air on the lighthouse Island in Quebec was electric as the light fog began to lift. Imagine a constant flurry of wings as countless Atlantic Puffins returned from their fishing expeditions, vibrant orange beaks crammed full of silvery treasures for their young. It was a spectacle that truly lived up to its "Galore" billing!

But amidst this charming chaos, another fascinating seabird diligently did its parental duties: the sleek and elegant Razorbills, clutching Capeline in their dark bills. Like Puffins, they are true masters of their marine environment; you can't help but admire their dual expertise. Those seemingly short wings, so efficient for powerful flight across the waves, transform into incredibly effective flippers underwater. They become agile pursuit predators, expertly chasing down fish, shrimp, and delectable morsels.

Like the puffins, the Razorbills often encounter obstacles on the final approach to their burrows. A sudden shift in the air current and the unexpected intrusion of another bird are enough to cause them to abort their carefully planned descent, circle again and make another determined attempt to enter their rocky crevice; this particular Razorbill made nine circuits before finally landing.

The light fog diffused the light to subdue the highlights in the background and reveal all of the details in the black feathers without harsh contrast; perfect conditions for photography!

Adding drama: Puffin in flight with fish against a dramatic, dark background.

Sometimes the easy shot is hard to resist. Picture this: a steady drizzle, a uniformly white sky, and a charming puffin flying in stark relief. Easy to see and focus on – a photographer's dream for a quick capture, right?

But on days like these, there's a different kind of magic to be found, a deeper story waiting to be told. On this tiny island, a jewel of rugged beauty crowned with a solitary lighthouse, the overcast skies and soft rain become an opportunity, not an obstacle.

I know a few spots here, tucked away where the dark, dramatic cliffs plunge into the churning sea. On a "white sky" day, these shadowed rock faces become the perfect canvas. Imagine a flash of the bright bill and vibrant orange feet against the deep, textured darkness as a puffin zips by. The contrast is breathtaking, the image imbued with a sense of place and wildness that a simple puffin-against-white shot can't quite capture.

And oh, the puffins! This island teems with them. The air is alive with their whirring wings and comical landings. It's almost impossible to leave without mastering the art of capturing birds in flight. Your memory cards and hard drives will overflow with an incredible and diverse portfolio of these avian acrobats.

But this adventure is about more than just photography. It's about immersing yourself in the raw beauty of this remote island. Imagine cozy evenings in lighthouse accommodations, the rhythmic sweep of the lamp comforting. And the food? World Bear Day (March 23rd) raises awareness about bear conservation, highlighting threats like habitat loss and poaching and promoting efforts to protect these vital species and their ecosystems.

A magical moment unfolded during my Ultimate Brown Bears workshop at the start of Alaska's golden hour when a Brown Bear Cub approached my group to show off its fresh Salmon. There was no hiding its excitement as this cub shook its head back and forth, often looking towards us as if inviting us to play.

Neotropic Cormorant with Rainbow Trout

Here is a Neotropic Cormorant with a Rainbow Trout from yesterday morning (November 30, 2024) while I scout the best locations and opportunities for my upcoming Best of Bosque Worksop in New Mexico.

I was working with the local ducks, and this Cormorant had the nerve to cause a commotion and catch a Rainbow Trout directly in front of me. Despite the best techniques, setting myself up with the best light angle and background, there was an ounce of luck involved in getting an eye on the fish and bird visible in the image.

It takes a minute for the dust to settle before we can fully appreciate everything we witness and experience. Looking back through the memories of my recently completed five sold-out, back-to-back Deluxe Atlantic Puffin workshops, I can’t help but feel somewhat overwhelmed by them. There are those moments frozen in time by my camera, but there are also the moments standing on the beach before sunrise, waiting for the imagess to emerge from the scene. It’s not only about the images! I keep thinking about new friendships and when a client starts to understand a new technique or theory or, perhaps, realizes that exposure theory may be simpler than they thought. That’s what makes me happy!

“The Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshop Photo Tour was fantastic! The island is remote, and Chris helped me with some complex travel arrangements. The location is beautiful, away from other people getting in your shots. There are many photo ops on the island, many razerbills, gulls, and my favorite, 1,000s of puffins. We were able to shoot them on land, taking off, flying, and bringing back fish. Not only is Chris an internationally renowned wildlife photographer, he is an incredible teacher. He assessed each of our photography skills and worked with us at our level, answering questions and making suggestions. We were able to shoot several times each day. He would walk around the island and let us know if there were spots that were especially good, helping us find the best opportunities. We stayed in the lightkeepers inn, which was very nice. Our French chef was fantastic, and prepared meals with several options. I especially liked the eggs Benedict and salmon. Coastal Brown (Grizzly) Bear Eye to Eye

A Coastal Brown (Grizzly) Bear cub proudly shows off its prize: a freshly caught salmon during my Ultimate Brown Bears of Alaska Workshop in Katmai National Park.

If you dream of fishing bears in golden light with unique autumn colours in the background, my Ultimate Brown Bears of Alaska trip is for you! We are the last group in the park for the season, and the bears are enormous, with fur that glistens from eating so much salmon to prepare for their winter hibernation. The September sun in Alaska has started to move south of the equator for the winter, so the low light angle and light quality are spectacular.

Join me for my Ultimate Coastal Brown Bears of Katmai Adventure from September 17 to 24 for an incredible 8-day/7-night photographic adventure on a private charter along the Katmai Coast of Alaska. We will photograph the numerous Coastal Brown Bears congregating along streams overflowing with salmon as they fatten up for the long and harsh Alaskan winter. Unlike many other tours, our Itinerary starts by flying out to the ship from Kodiak, Alaska, on day 1 (flights from Kodiak to the boat and back are included), and we remain there until we fly back to Kodiak on day 8. We photograph bears from day 1 to day 8, so eight days of epic brown bear photography! There are only two spots left!

This is, by far, my favourite from last summer’s Deluxe Puffins Galore Lighthouse Adventure Workshops. The sun came up quickly as the Puffins were swirling around trying to align their trajectory, the wind with the entry to their burrows; I have watched them circle as many as 23 times while trying to get everything right before landing. Sunrise was 04:59 on August 11, 2023, and this image was made just a few moments later, against the glowing out-of-focus cliffs.

Magical Atlantic Puffin flying with fish against Golden Cliffs

Almost at the end of the road along the upper North Shore of the Saint Lawrence River in The Gulf of The Saint Lawrence and almost in Labrador is a little island with a newly restored lighthouse. I charter the entire island every year for the first two weeks of August and host the most magical, fairytale-like “Puffins Galore and so much more workshops” to photograph Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills and more. The magic of the location, the quality of light, the varied backgrounds and the proximity to the birds make it the best place in the world to photograph Atlantic Puffins! We sleep in the fully restored lighthouse keepers’ quarters and eat gourmet food, and our biggest commute to the Puffins once on the island is only 200 meters (200 yards).

An Atlantic Puffin returns to its nest with a beak full of fish during my Deluxe Atlantic Puffins Galore Workshop in Quebec, Canada.

Join me for a fairytale adventure. We will live in a restored lighthouse, eat gourmet food, and photograph Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills (and more) that bring fish to feed their babies only 200 meters (200 yards) away. This is the best location in the world to photograph both species and is perfectly timed for them, bringing the most fish back to their babies.

The tiny island, only 1km (.6 Miles) in circumference, means no long pre-dawn drives or long hikes to access the best locations; it is right outside the door! Since we live on the island, there is no rough boat commute to endure either.
