On the first morning of the first Deluxe Atlantic Puffins and so much more Workshops last July 29, 2023, we were all on the beach well before the 04:43 sunrise. The Puffins were already streaming into their burrows with loads of fish for their growing Pufflings directly in front of us. It was dark, and a layer of fog threatened our golden light. The fog lifted by about 05:05, and this is one of a sequence of images made at 05:11 - our morning was a good one :)
Atlantic Puffin Headshot
Here's another Atlantic Puffin portrait from my recent PUFFINS GALORE (and so much more) DELUXE WORKSHOP. We woke to fog several mornings, and Puffins were perched everywhere. We used the park information signs as blinds and were able to spend hours making portraits at just about point-blank range. After making the standard tight headshots, I always explore more interesting poses while working at the minimum focusing distance of our lenses with an extremely limited depth of field.
KUDOS:
Chris: Just a quick note to express my appreciation for the fine workshop (PUFFINS GALORE DELUXE WORKSHOP) hosting provided by you and Julie, along with Louise and Marie-Josée and the charming Auberge facilities. We were fortunate to have such good weather and abundant puffin activity, and your guidance and tips were very helpful, even for a long-time Sony mirrorless shooter. I found the other clients quite interesting and enjoyed sharing the experience with all of them. Despite some travel challenges to and from the Mingan Archipelago, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and look forward to the prospect of joining you in another workshop in the future.
Again, thank you for your excellent leadership and engaging fellowship on Iles aux Parroquets – now to plough through the 30,000+ images I brought back to find the “exceptional” few!
Best regards,

Magical Atlantic Puffin flying with fish against Golden Cliffs
Almost at the end of the road along the upper North Shore of the Saint Lawrence River in The Gulf of The Saint Lawrence and almost in Labrador is a little island with a newly restored lighthouse. I charter the entire island every year for the first two weeks of August and host the most magical, fairytale-like “Puffins Galore and so much more workshops” to photograph Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills and more. The magic of the location, the quality of light, the varied backgrounds and the proximity to the birds make it the best place in the world to photograph Atlantic Puffins! We sleep in the fully restored lighthouse keepers’ quarters and eat gourmet food, and our biggest commute to the Puffins once on the island is only 200 meters (200 yards).
Due to popular demand, I have just added one extra workshop from August 10 to 13, and the spots are filling quickly. Learn more about my “Puffins Galore and so much more workshops” HERE.
Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish
An Atlantic Puffin returns to its nest with a beak full of fish during my Deluxe Atlantic Puffins Galore Workshop in Quebec, Canada.
Join me for a fairytale adventure. We will live in a restored lighthouse, eat gourmet food, and photograph Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills (and more) that bring fish to feed their babies only 200 meters (200 yards) away. This is the best location in the world to photograph both species and is perfectly timed for them, bringing the most fish back to their babies.
The tiny island, only 1km (.6 Miles) in circumference, means no long pre-dawn drives or long hikes to access the best locations; it is right outside the door! Since we live on the island, there is no rough boat commute to endure either.
Deluxe Puffins Galore Workshop Update
I have just added another workshop from August 10-13 due to the overwhelming popularity of my Deluxe Puffins Galore and so much more workshops.
This is a dream deluxe photography tour: Dreamlike accommodations in a newly restored lighthouse just feet away from nesting Atlantic Puffins and Razorbills on a small island in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Quebec, Canada, with gourmet food.
It is timed to coincide with the very best time to be at the colony when the Puffins return with fish to feed their young.
The group size is limited to 5-8 photographers (the price is per person in single or double occupancy, as desired, with only six rooms available).
Exclusive use of the lighthouse and accommodations means we will be the island’s only inhabitants.
The small group size means more assistance, one-on-one guidance, and coaching for every participant.
Long lenses are not mandatory for this tour; 200-400mm reach is adequate for an impressive portfolio.
Photographers of all levels are welcome; the tour pace will suit everyone’s needs and skill level. Participants should be able to comfortably walk 200 meters (200 yards) at a slow pace while carrying their equipment.
Owners of all camera brands are welcome. My 40 years of professional photography include the last six years as a Sony ambassador, 16 years using Canon as a Canon Northern Explorer of Light, and 16 years using Nikon before that. I can help anyone with any brand improve their photography.

Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish
Another Atlantic Puffin from my recently concluded Deluxe Atlantic Puffins and so much more workshop in Quebec. I used my Sony Alpha 1 with the easy-to-carry Sony 200-600mm zoom lens to make this image hand-held as the Puffin circled before landing at its burrow. Everyone enjoyed the clear blue skies after several wet and rainy days.
Atlantic Puffin in flight with sand lance against blue sky
An Atlantic Puffin was photographed carrying a bill full of sand lance back to its burrow to feed its baby during my recent Puffins Galore and so much more workshop. I grabbed my favourite (and super portable) Sony 200-600mm lens for this blue sky session: simply too much fun with so many Puffins returning to their nests with fish - smile!
Atlantic Puffin over wildflowers & Kudos
I just received the best text:
My friends and I are nearly full-time workshop participants. We love being guided around the world, photographing wildlife with experts and other like-minded people. Finding and travelling with Chris Dodds, however, was a special gift. He TRULY knows the areas in which his workshops are held. He knows the people, the wildlife, and their behaviour. And, of course, he knows photography and how to teach. Now when I’m shooting, I’m channelling Chris and what he’s taught me. - Linda Scher - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA (Winter Snowy Owls 2023, Songbirds of Pelee 2023 & Deluxe Atlantic Puffins 2023)
Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish in first drops of sweet morning light
This image was created on August 11, during the last of five back-to-back Deluxe Atlantic Puffins and so much more workshops. It was a magical morning, with repeat clients Julie & Rainer (Saint Paul Island), Charlie (Ospreys) and first-time attendee & solo adventurer Janet living the dream as a full-time RVer.
Atlantic Puffin in flight with mouth full of sand lance
Here is an Atlantic Puffin returning to its burrow with a mouth full of Sand Lance to feed its baby. The image was made at 04:50 on a cloudy and foggy morning during my Deluxe Puffins Galore Workshop.
Instead of waiting for brighter conditions, I chose to use 20,000 ISO and love the results that the new AI noise reduction algorithm in Photoshop produces.
Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish in the fog
It was a dark and foggy morning, and waves of Puffins were bringing back freshly caught fish for their babies during my Deluxe Atlantic Puffins and so much more workshops. Today’s cameras with the latest software can negate any sign of fog, but I much prefer the fog as I saw it, as it adds such an ethereal quality to the image.
Deluxe Atlantic Puffin Workshop update
A portrait of an Atlantic Puffin against out-of-focus kelp at low tide. I have only one room available for my August 10-13, 2023, Deluxe Atlantic Puffins and so much more workshop in Quebec, Canada. This is your chance to join me for a dream workshop; it all starts with the newly renovated lighthouse accommodations, gourmet food, and….wait for it….. Puffins. The island is only 1km (.6 mile) in circumference, and the action happens only 200 meters (200 yards) from our accommodations! No long drives, hikes or cliffs to contend with! Live the dream & join the trip HERE.
Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish at sunset
One of my favourite Atlantic Puffin images of all time; We were set up on the beach in perfect conditions with the wind blowing from our backs and the sun behind us. The storm cleared quickly, and the pastel colours in the sky were fabulous as sunset quickly approached. The tide was about to turn, but no Puffins were flying in. We waited patiently, and suddenly, there was a flurry of activity, and Puffins started bringing fish back to the babies in their burrows. This image was made with my Sony 200-600mm zoom lens @472mm.
Join me at the best place in the world to photograph Atlantic Puffins! The included recently renovated lighthouse accommodations on a small private island are what dream adventures are made of. Learn more about my DELUXE ATLANTIC PUFFINS GALORE AND SO MUCH MORE WORKSHOP HERE.

Chris is not only an excellent teacher but an outstanding host.
My teenage son (an avid youth nature photographer) and I just came back from Chris' Puffin trip. We had a day of pouring rain, a day of cloud cover and a day of sunshine and Chris gave practical advice on how to get great images no matter what the weather. Chris is skilled at meeting each photographer where they are as he gives individual customized attention out in the field. Chris uses a variety of teaching strategies (including great metaphors!) to make complex information concrete and understandable. My son came back with incredible images - puffin portraits in beautiful golden light, puffins and razorbills with fish in flight, beautiful groupings, single puffins in grass, flowers and rocky cliffs. He also came back with a wealth of tips, tools and strategies. And amidst all of the superb photography instruction and individualized attention, there was also lots of camaraderie and great stories. Chris is not only an excellent teacher but an outstanding host. Can't wait for our next Chris Dodds adventure!

Atlantic Puffin Headshot with beak full of fish
An Atlantic Puffin proudly displaying its bounty during my Deluxe Puffins Galore Workshop in Quebec.
Puffins swim underwater using their semi-extended wings as paddles to "fly" through the water and their feet as a rudder. It swims fast and can reach considerable depths and stay submerged for up to a minute. It fishes by sight and can swallow small fish while submerged, but larger specimens are brought to the surface. It can catch several small fish in one dive, holding the first ones in place in its beak with its muscular, grooved tongue while it catches others. The two mandibles are hinged in such a way that they can be held parallel to hold a row of fish in place and these are also retained by inward-facing serrations on the edges of the beak.

“The Deluxe Puffins Galore Workshop exceeded my expectations. Chris is an exceptional photographer, teacher, and all around good guy. He was quick to point out the best photographic opportunities for the group, taking into account the constantly changing weather, light and tides. He was always available to answer questions and give tips, catering to all levels of experience in the group. The accommodations were excellent and the food was first rate. Our chefs/housekeepers/hostesses were amazing. The photographic opportunities were endless with an unbelievable number of puffins as well as razorbills, guillemots, gulls, whales and seals. This was my first photography workshop and I am looking forward to my next adventure with Chris.”

Atlantic Puffin in flight with fish and Deluxe Puffins Galore Workshop Update
I love the painterly quality of this image captured before sunrise in light fog during my Deluxe Puffins Galore Workshop last August 11 (2022). I processed another version with more contrast, virtually eliminating the fog, but I prefer this version. Notice that I chose to use 10,000 ISO to properly expose the image while using an action-stopping 1/5,000s shutter speed. My Sony 200-600mm has become my most used and much-loved lens :)
