That early morning mist hanging over Lake Blue Cypress never gets old. The sun had just crested the low clouds to the east, and the first clean light was hitting the cypress tops — that soft, honey gold you wait for. The air was already full of osprey calls.
This one came in with a fresh Black Crappie in its talons, wings locked and perfectly lit in that golden light — one quick circle, no second chances, one pass.
It wasn’t just the catch — it was everything that followed. It called as it flew, then carried straight through past us and set down near the forest edge. A brief pause, all business, and then straight into feeding. Head first, efficient and deliberate, before anything gets taken back to the chicks.
The whole sequence lasted seconds.
Capt. Don and I work closely to stay in the best light and anticipate behaviour — that’s a big part of why moments like this line up.
Like most of the best moments, it was over before anyone had time to think.
You either had your exposure set and were ready… or you watched it happen.
If this is the kind of moment you want to be ready for — not chasing, not guessing, but anticipating and executing — join me next April at Lake Blue Cypress. Small group with a maximum of five participants, incredible access, and endless opportunities when everything comes together.
More Kudos
“After some time, I was finally able to share an image of an osprey from the workshop with Christopher Dodds in Vero Beach, Florida. Chris is an incredible leader who carefully selects the best boat captain to ensure a great experience on the water. As we gently glided along in the small boat, he had an amazing eye for opportunity—pointing out scenes and moments that helped us capture the strongest, most meaningful images.
I’ve also had the privilege of joining him on other workshops, including Eagles Galore in Homer, Alaska, and Puffins Galore in Quebec. I often tell my friends that whenever I sign up for one of Chris’s workshops, I know I’ll come home with some of my best images. His many years of wildlife photography experience are clearly reflected in the stunning work throughout his portfolio. I’m already looking forward to participating in more of his workshops in the future.”
